Who’s in charge? Management’s right to manage under scrutiny

Recent industrial disputes involving Qantas, Baiada and Victorian nurses all currently revolve around not just pay issues, but also disagreements about management practices.

In Qantas and Baiada’s case it concerns issues with the flexibility of their workforces, while the Victorian Government is trying to amend nurse-patient ratios to make them more efficient.

However, unions are opposing the changes, effectively trying to manage the companies from the outside, and taking (in some cases, illegal) strike action. So are managers losing the ability to restructure their businesses within existing workplace laws as they see fit?
