Licence to spill: is bicycle licensing needed?

Last week, we covered a report which revealed that bike injury hospitalisations in Victoria had increased by 75% over the past decade.

While the increase in bicycle use throughout Melbourne is beneficial for the environment, our city’s traffic congestion woes and the health of our citizens – the rise in the number of cyclists on our roads does raise the issue of the safe and proper use of our roads.

Poll Results: school leavers’ education skills don’t add up

The latest VECCI poll shows that, overwhelmingly, employers believe that school leavers have poor literacy skills, while a majority believe that numeracy skills are poor as well. Of further concern is that one in five do not believe the Australian Government’s National Curriculum will make any difference.

Poll Result: Clear support for population growth, but pressure is on the government

Poll Update: unfair dismissals are a growing headache for employers

The problem of unfair dismissals is a growing one and has already proven a headache for some employers.   

At the time of their introduction, the Federal Government claimed that the new unfair dismissal laws were designed in a way to minimise impacts on smaller to medium sized businesses.   

However, VECCI’s initial research into this issue indicates that many employers  are contemplating engaging workers via labour hire – or not hiring employees at all – to avoid the cost of unfair dismissal claims.   

In many instances, this is resulting in the payment of ‘go away’ money and, in an even more troubling trend, are often proving to be vexatious.

Poll: Population debate continues to grow

The Australian Government has released its next Intergenerational Report today. The report projects that Australia’s population will reach 35 million by the year 2050 -  if our current high birth rate and high net migration intake continues.

But many leading politicians are split on whether this will have a positive or negative impact on Australia.
