Carbon tax could increase water bills

Victorians could face water price rises after it was found that the carbon tax will add to water utilities’ energy costs, research by VECCI has found.

Furthermore, the Federal Government has also not adequately explained how it plans to compensate small business for any such price rises.

Budget update: plan to slash public service jobs necessary

Yesterday’s Victorian Budget Update and accompanying announcements about the need to downsize the public service shows the difficult task ahead for the Victorian Government.

The update showed that Victoria is on track for a surplus of $147 million this financial year.  This will go a long way to helping the State retain its AAA credit rating and is a solid result in the face of a challenging economic environment.

The surplus announcement is welcome, but there is little margin for error.

A Federal Government working group has proposed several possible changes to business taxes designed to encourage risk taking by businesses and stimulate productivity, which will be considered by the Government next year.

The Business Tax Working Group yesterday released an interim report containing several suggestions, which will be considered for inclusion in its final report.
