Reality bites

By Andrew Lowcock

In case you’re dreaming of reality TV stardom one day, it’s best to tell your boss about it beforehand, as one British woman found out the hard way last week.

Fiona Robertson auditioned for the UK version of The X Factor back in April, dressing up as the Wicked Witch of the West and performing a number from the musical Wicked.

To attend the audition, she had to take a sickie from her work as an entertainer at the Wookey Hole Cave, a cave and tourist attraction in southern England.

Initially, her bosses were none the wiser. That was until Fiona’s picture appeared in promotions for last week’s episode, wearing the same witch costume she wears at work where she stars as the ‘Wookey Witch’.

Her bosses then cross-checked the dates and found out Fiona had taken the sickie to audition, and have now promised disciplinary action.

Worse for Fiona, she failed to make it past the audition.

While she waits for her fate to be determined, Wookey Hole are cashing in on their 15 minutes of fame, running an online poll asking if Fiona should be sacked for her deception.

One suspects Fiona will eventually be reprieved – after all, she’s just unwittingly brought Wookey Hole Cave the kind of publicity that money can’t buy.
