The state and performance of Victoria’s public transport network has been under the microscope over the past week – with newspapers, television reports and talkback radio airwaves full of stories about the performance of public transport provider Metro and the state of current infrastructure.
But how is this impacting on Victorian employers?
Vote to have your say on public transport delays and cancellations
On Wednesday 10 March, Metro announced their latest performance results, which saw 16.6 per cent of services delivered late. Victoria’s Premier, the Hon. John Brumby MP said he was “disappointed” that Metro had failed to meet its targets as set out in their contract with the Government, while others have pointed the finger of blame at the Victorian Government for failing to invest in infrastructure upgrades.
VECCI has continued to call for ongoing investment in all of Victoria’s public transport infrastructure to improve safety, reliability and efficiency for business and the general community. At the 2009 Victoria Summit, VECCI again called for infrastructure projects such as the abolishment of level crossings and the upgrade of wooden sleepers on suburban railway lines to concrete sleepers.
While VECCI believes that this sort of infrastructure investment is important to move forward, the impacts of delays and cancellations are hitting passengers and businesses now.
As VECCI continues to advocate for improved transport infrastructure with Government and Opposition, it is important to know how recent public transport performance has impacted on your business.

I catch a 9:22am train from Altona to the city which is outside the peak time. It has arrived on time twice since Metro took over in December. Lately it is 10 – 15 minutes late or cancelled without announcements. The train is to arrive at 9:48am at Flagstaff. It never has since I have been catching it 15 months ago and I am late to work MOST days. I then have to stay back to make up my time. Absolutely appalling service.
