Today, VECCI is hosting the 2009 Victoria Summit in Parliament House.

As a business, community and Government partnership, the Victoria Summit seeks to respond to the key issues that face not only our business community, but the broader Victorian and national economies. In particular, the Summit aims to establish a strong policy agenda for the next two years to help Victoria recover from the current economic challenges and build a platform for competitive and sustainable growth well into the future.

For those unable to attend, The VECCI Blog will be providing live updates during the Summit, covering outcomes and discussions from key speakers.

“Collar-blind” – industrial action extending to professional employees

It would seem that the Fair Work Act 2009 is having a significant impact – regardless of the colour of one’s collar. In particular, industrial action is no longer just the terrain of blue-collar employees, as changes brought about by the Fair Work Act 2009 have extended certain bargaining provisions into the realm of traditionally “white-collar” professions.

“Stopping crime in its tracks” a step in the right direction

Ted Baillieu’s law and order initiative ‘Stopping Crime in its Tracks’ is a step in the right direction.

It is essential that we invest in law and order, and putting over 900 security personnel onto our public transport system is a good start. Stations are a magnet for crime, with many assaults taking place in their vicinity.

Victoria’s reputation as a safe state is important for its future liveability and attractiveness to visitors, and this announcement is welcome.
