Hitting the front page of today’s Financial Review, an article reveals that, within the first few months of the Rudd government’s new workplace relations reforms, unfair dismissal claims have almost doubled.

Q&A: Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme Recap

Over the past four weeks, I’ve been travelling throughout regional Victoria to talk to business leaders about the proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS), the impacts it will have on business and the work that VECCI is doing to help businesses get ready for the low carbon economy.

These briefings have been a great opportunity to talk to businesses about the proposed design of the scheme and to focus on some of the nitty gritty issues in terms of how the scheme will affect their business and in particular where a carbon price is going to impact. There have been lots of great suggestions for new policies, programs or services the government could adopt (and VECCI can advocate for); and there have also been a lot of great questions asked. My upcoming blog posts will focus on these suggestions and questions.

Many of the questions that came up are covered in our Carbon 101 FAQs or in the VECCI Small Business and Climate Change Fast Sheet Series, however I thought it would be a good idea to post some of the questions that were a bit tricky or unusual right here on the blog.

Australia: not sick of “sickies”

With Australia just emerging from the deep end of a financial recession and the rest of the world still treading water, it might be reasonable to think that taking a ‘sickie’ would be the last thing on our minds.

But a report by Direct Health Australia indicates sick leave has increased on average by 8% since 2007-08. Of these respondents, 70% believed that somewhere between 10-25% of absences are “non-genuine”.

Victoria’s regional business event sector – will it survive?

Victoria’s regional business events sector is facing arguably the toughest operating conditions in years. Knocked about by the GFC and the Black Saturday bushfires, the sector is down on previous years by as much as 35%.
