Those who pooh-pooh the value of major events to Victoria have been dealt another hammer-blow – this time with an oversized sand wedge, as it was revealed that the Australian Masters golf tournament in November has been sold out.
The main drawcard, of course, is world No. 1 Tiger Woods.
The Victorian Government and its Major Events Corporation were roundly crticised by the “nattering nabobs of negativism”* when his visit was announced in March 2009, facilitated in part by a modest subsidy of his appearance fee, which will be dwarfed by the spending of the bus, train and plane loads of tourists converging on Melbourne in just over a month to see Tiger play.
