Cleaner coal takes another step forward

We are going where we are headed on climate change – and despite the plaintive cries of those afflicted with an ideologically driven anti-coal fetish, the future includes cleaner coal.

While renewables will play an increasingly important part in the mix, it is not possible to switch off coal-fired power stations and migrate to solar, wind or wave power overnight, even if we wanted to.

In a recent survey conducted by VECCI, findings have suggested 29% of respondents have experienced some form of loss in trade due to the rise in Melbourne CBD street violence, while 43% have experienced property damage.

A report from the Daily Mail has revealed that one in five companies in the UK will forego plans for a work Christmas party this year, due to the recession. Half of the remaining 80% firms that were sampled were still undecided about whether they’d go ahead with a Christmas celebration.

AIRC Annual Report highlight rise in unfair dismissal claims

Workplace Express has reported that the rise in dismissal-related claims in 2008-09 can be attributed to economic factors – primarily, the downturn arising from the GFC – in addition to the commencement of the Fair Work Act 2009 on 1 July 2009.

The AIRC’s annual report, released yesterday, shows that 7994 unfair dismissal and unfair termination claims were made in 2008-09. This represents an increase of more than 30% on the 6067 applications lodged in the previous financial year. Fair Work Australia received 2736 termination of employment claims between July 1 and September 30.

“A Country That Makes Things” – envisioning a way forward for the manufacturing sector

The AMWU and the AWU have formed a manufacturing alliance and will co-host a conference in Canberra on Wednesday 28 October. The intention of the conference is to deliver a paper titled A Country That Makes Things, written by the AMWU’s Dave Oliver and the AWU’s Paul Howes.

The paper proposes a seven-strand framework to facilitate ongoing productivity, and labour force participation, in the manufacturing sector.

Regional reception: improved mobile coverage essential for bushfire season

Both Tourism Alliance Victoria and VECCI participated in the 2007-08 State Parliamentary Inquiry into Rural and Regional Tourism.

One of a total of 39 recommendations in the Committee’s Final Report was the recommendation that “the State Government encourage Tourism Australia and the newly-formed Regional Development Australia to ensure the extension of high speed broadband internet and mobile phone coverage to all areas of the State.”
